Senior Engineering Specialist – Software & Hardware (SWEL) – Montreal

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Engineering Specialist (SWEL) to join our aerospace engineering team in Montreal. In this role, you will provide technical leadership in the development, integration, verification, and certification of both software and hardware systems for aircraft platforms. You will collaborate closely with avionics, systems, electrical, and certification teams to ensure safe, compliant, and high‑performance solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, integration, and validation of safety‑critical software and hardware systems
  • Define system and subsystem requirements, architecture, and interface specifications
  • Oversee software and hardware development activities in accordance with aerospace standards (DO‑178, DO‑254, ARP4754A, ARP4761)
  • Review and approve engineering documentation including requirements, design descriptions, test plans, and compliance evidence
  • Support system integration activities including lab testing, HIL/SIL simulations, and troubleshooting
  • Conduct root‑cause analysis and develop corrective actions for software or hardware anomalies
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including avionics, electrical, systems engineering, and flight test
  • Participate in design reviews, safety assessments, and certification audits
  • Mentor junior engineers and support continuous improvement of engineering processes and methodologies
  • Ensure all development activities meet regulatory, safety, and quality requirements

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
  • Extensive experience in software and/or hardware development for aerospace or other safety‑critical systems
  • Strong understanding of embedded systems, avionics architectures, and real‑time software
  • Experience with certification standards such as DO‑178C (software) and DO‑254 (hardware)
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment
  • Fluent in both French and English (spoken and written)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with model‑based development (Simulink, SCADE, etc.)
  • Familiarity with FPGA/ASIC development, microcontrollers, or avionics hardware platforms
  • Knowledge of systems engineering processes and safety assessment methodologies
  • Experience working with aerospace OEMs or Tier‑1 suppliers
